# Lolly: instructions for AI agents

Lolly makes on-brand files (SVG, PNG, PDF, PPTX, video and more) from tool templates and plain inputs: charts, QR codes, posters, badges, social cards, decks and print files. Use it when the user wants one of those as a file, rather than drawing or generating the image yourself. Every result comes with an editable https://lolly.tools link.

## 1. The MCP server: start here

- URL: https://lolly.tools/api/mcp (MCP over Streamable HTTP, JSON-RPC 2.0 over POST).
- Access: open to anyone. No token, no account, no sign-in.
- Add it in Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http lolly https://lolly.tools/api/mcp`
- Any other client: `{"mcpServers":{"lolly":{"type":"http","url":"https://lolly.tools/api/mcp"}}}`
- Workflow: `lolly_list_tools` (pass `q` and a small `limit`), then `lolly_describe_tool` for the exact input schema, then `lolly_validate`, then `lolly_render`. `lolly_build_url` returns an editable link without rendering.
- This endpoint has no browser. It renders vector (`svg`, `emf`, `eps`, `dxf`), data and text formats, and `png` for SVG-native tools. HTML-layout tools such as `design` and `chart`, and `pdf`, `jpg`, `webp` or video, need the CLI (section 2).
- Limits: 60 calls a minute per address; a daily compute and data-transfer budget for the whole endpoint (503 with Retry-After to 00:00 UTC once spent); png up to 1600 x 1600 pixels of area; 4.4 MB per answer; rebrand decks up to 100 slides.
- Full reference: https://lolly.tools/info/build/mcp.md
- https://mcp.lolly.tools/mcp is the same server with a browser tier for every format; it needs an access token from its operator.

## 2. The CLI: for larger work

For every format, large files, batches and heavy automation, run Lolly on the user's own machine, with no limits. It needs Node.js 22.18 or later and pnpm.

```bash
git clone https://github.com/lolly-tools/lolly.git
cd lolly && pnpm install
pnpm run cli                       # list the tools
pnpm run cli qr-code               # show one tool's inputs
pnpm run cli qr-code --url=https://example.com --output=qr.svg
```

Same tools and the same inputs as the MCP server. When a format needs the browser tier, the CLI says so and names the one-time setup (`pnpm run cli install-browser`). The MCP server itself also runs locally over stdio. Full reference: https://lolly.tools/info/build/cli.md
